is now August Phoenix - Hats by Heather Daveno
Artist | Professional | Artisan Crafts
United States
I am an American-born artisan who began handcrafting hats from found materials over twenty years ago. My early hats reflected my studies of medieval Eurasia and renaissance Europe, influences that are still apparent in my work.
A few years ago, I was introduced to a speculative genre known as Steampunk. My embroidered wools and furs gave way to straw, lace, clock parts and hardware. My design horizons continue to expand with every buckle, spring, cog and chain I acquire.
At about that same time, I overcame my fear of flying and now travel internationally. The cities I visit and the cultures I am introduced to, add additional inspiration to many of my art pieces.
I design my hats from reclaimed textiles and found objects. Working with these unique materials allows me to produce distinctive, one-of-a-kind pieces of functional, wearable art. I fuse cultural and historical influences to craft hats that are unique and timeless ... so much so that my patrons have been overheard to say: “one cannot own too many [of Heather's] hats” and have become avid collectors of my work.
August Phoenix, is a registered woman-owned business in Washington State. I donate a percentage of my sales to Real Change, a not-for-profit organization devoted to ending homelessness and poverty.
August - (adj) resplendent, noble. Phoenix - (noun) a mythical bird represented in many cultures as being born anew from its own ash; (verb) a thing of peerless excellence.
August Phoenix - a reference to the fusion of cultural and time period influences that dominate my work; a nod to objects reused. New hats from reclaimed materials, handcrafted to wear forever…
